I have sometimes wondered if these partisan, pre-election entrails inspections are serious analyses, or just an excuse to write about the unpredictable future. The polls show a tight race, which will probably be decided on a get-out-the-vote basis rather than on the inevitable massive ad spending by both sides.

The second paragraph is pure fantasy. Barrett beat his union-endorsed rival by a pretty wide percentage. A lot of people who hate Walker might be simply sitting out the preliminary bout and saving their passion for the main event. Sometimes you know how you are going to vote, even when you don't have much enthusiasm for your candidate because you despise the incumbent. Sound familiar?

There are some complexities here. Gas prices hit their highest level under Bush in June 2008. It was not his fault, of course, that was when the institutional investors were looking for a place with high return and found that if you bought into a highly fluid market like gas futures and created an artificial shortage, the price rose. Turned out to be a bubble, but not before the Democrats made political use of it. Turnabout is fair play, I suppose, but using as a baseline very low prices- resulting from the global economic collapse that occurred when you were running the store- is a bit cynical.

It is also a bit eyebrow-raising to oppose the extension of the wind energy tax credit and then feign surprise when, as a result, jobs are lost. Solyndra is also a complicated story. They may not have spent the money wisely. On the other hand, China's government subsidized role in the solar market was a major contributing factor as well. They may well enjoy long-term benefits that far outlast the political crowing over one of their victims.

The future belongs to alternative energy. Fossil fuels are finite and, if you believe 98% of climate scientists, a bit dicey in the long term. But AGW or not, finite is finite. At some point we will have to use something else to turn the lights on. Along the way there will be failures- that is the way a market economy works. But hey, conservatives are always saying that central planning is unfair because it picks winners. Solyndra is an object lesson that, in our political culture, this is not necessarily so.

Actually, no - I don't agree that they were overpaid. They were paid what their respective boards of directors decided they were worth. It's not the compensation I have a problem with; it's the faux "outrage" from Obama, used as a class-warfare wedge to get support from the free-stuff army that voted for him. He is selectively "outraged" because banks are a favorite target of class warriors. His "good bet" green energy failures are somehow immune.

Executive compensation is a contract between organizations and private individuals. If the government starts interfering with that relationship by deciding when "you've been paid enough", we won't have free enterprise anymore.

A bit more than a decade ago Howard Stern was forced off the Richmond airwaves when he attacked the Ukrops. He had the highest listenership in the market, but the only people willing to buy ads were the bottom feeders- payday loans, debt restructuring shops and gold dealers. Radio is business, it cost less to drop Stern while continuing to pay his cost and put on local programming that brought in more revenue.Limbaugh's provocative approach thrills his fans, but he doesn't have a right to a commercial megaphone, unless he can pay for it. He has always been a minority taste, NOW doesn't need a majority to bleed him, only to keep the controversy alive- which keeps their donations flowing as well. On both sides, it is about money and how to raise it.

I just bumped into this article while looking up something on the ARC. It's back in the news again.

Anyway, I will note that the "other people's money argument" isn't especially strong in this case.

For one, the Tax Foundation has consistently demonstrated that NJ is a "donor state." That means that NJeyans pay more to the federal government than they receive in federal support and subsidies.

While NJ was 2nd, 3rd, or 4th highest in the amount paid in taxes to the federal government, it was generally in the bottom half (29th-38th) in terms of funding received. Consequently, NJ was 49th or 50th in federal spending received per dollar of tax paid. For EVERY year of the study.

Say what you will that federal spending is overboard and every state has to be weaned off. That's all well and good.

But, this is actually pretty clear case that New Jersey ($0.55 returned per every $1 paid in) has been underserved by all the pork which is has flowed to New Mexico ($2.00); Alaska ($1.87); West Virginia ($1.83); Mississippi ($1.77); North Dakota ($1.73); Alabama ($1.71); Virginia ($1.66); Hawaii ($1.60) Montana ($1.58).

The standout feature of those states is that they're largely rural and Republican.

NJ also has some of the highest per capita income in the country and is the densest in terms of population. You're reading that correctly: NJ's human capital is subsidizing the hinterlands of New Mexico, Alaska, West Virginia... and even good old Virginia where your blog is based. On the list of the "top" ten who suck more blood than they donate, only Virginia has a wealth of human capital. The others are primarily resource-heavy (Alaska, New Mexico) or are are simply effective porcine. And, not incidentally, most are consistently Republican states.

Yes, the wealthy people of New Jersey are paying higher taxes to support the relatively less wealthy people of those other states. That seems like... some kind of... utter inequity... that people with higher incomes and a higher standard of living should subsidize people with lower incomes and lower standards of living through federal spending. It's practically socialism. I know the fiscal hawks in those states are demanding their governors return the money.

I understand your angle, generally... but the argument that "it's other people's money" rings especially hollow coming from New Mexico, Alaska, and Virginia.

It doesn't matter if you oppose the ARC out of a general opposition to federal spending and a specifically hypercritical attitude toward mass transit. The point is that "it's other people's money" is the wrong angle on this one.

If anything, it's New Jersey's money finally coming back to them. New Mexico, Alaska, and Virginia just won't accept that as an answer.
